Last fall (1999) a couple times, once it started to get cold, I had some trouble I attributed to the starter. It sounded like it was spinning but the solenoid wasn’t kicking in. Once it warmed up a bit, it started OK. So I pulled the starter this spring and had it rebuilt, but they didn’t find anything they thought would cause a problem. In the process of putting things back together it was found that the gear ring was rotating on the flywheel.
When assembled, the gear ring is heated up and then placed on the aluminum flywheel. It cools, shrinks and that’s what holds it on. Seems that if they make one a bit small or one a bit large, they don’t hold. It’s been sent out to a machine shop to be pinned.
