There haven’t been too many problems since I put it togther. One rather exciting one was the second year it was on the road I was headed to the MG Car Club Sports Car & Vintage Auto Festival (car show for short) and left my house with my wife following behind. She could only stay at the show for a short while so drove one of our regular cars.
As I’m driving along I did notice a very slight a wiff of something burning, but it came and passed quickly so I dismissed it. I think I did one of those things were you think ignoring it will make it go away and it won’t really become anything of consequence.
We get to the thuway exit and that’s when the smell came back and strong enough that I couldn’t ignore it. I pulled right over after paying the toll and got out and walked around the car. I look at the back and the right rear wheel/brake line area is on fire. Not just hot and smelly, but real red and orange flames. I also noticed that it is engulfing the gas pump – it’s on that side of the MG gas tank. I quckly grabbed the fire exstinguisher from in front of the drivers seat and use it on the flames. The flames go out and 2 seconds later come back again just as bad. I hit it again with the extinguisher and they finally stay out. I could feel the heat coming off the backing plate of the right rear wheel.
I watched it for a minute or so to make sure it didn’t start again, which it didn’t. Scared the living crap out of me I’ll tell ya. My wife said “I didn’t know you could move that fast!”. Gee, thanks honey. I called a tow truck and had it brought home. Turned out the right rear brake shoes had seized. Replaced it all and it hasn’t happened again.
In addition to those mentioned in the attached sub pages of this page there were:
Dropped a bolt from one of the front shocks.
Overheated ignition coil – when I get a chance that will be a page in itself.
Other than those, the other problems have been self induced by me trying different things out – changing this, trying that. I have to say that if it wasn’t for me, it would be a very reliable car.
